Comedy for a Cause

In the past two months, the coronavirus has raged in China and other countries, infecting tens of thousands of people, with the situation in China is the most serious. Most international student from China worried about the situation and feel anxious because they cannot have any pathway to help their country.

Considering the international students at Northeastern University who worried about their families and their country, the Chinese Scholars and Students Association (CSSA) of Northeastern University, in conjunction with the Asian Studies Program and the Chinese Language Program of the World Languages Center, invited comedian Jessie to relax everyone in a tense atmosphere with the performance of “Comedy for a Cause.”

“It’s for a good cause, we build a bridge for students to make donations to their home country and help their families.” Mabel Lyu, a member of the CSSA program department, said. “I know many students are worried about their families as me. I cannot just wait for others to make changes.”

As the organizer of the activity, Lyu also responsible for contacting the comedian to give the show to students. “Jessie actually learned Chinese comedy in China during about 7 years. He also studies Chinese traditional comedy called cross talk and “Xiangsheng” in China. He cares about Chinese situation as well. I think he can definitely relieve students’ pressure and make them feel relax and warm.”

“He is the “right” person to be here for Chinese students because he shows Chinese traditional art and knows how worried Chinese students are.” Lyu said.

Additionally, considering most Chinese students in campus want to send medical equipment back to China as medical equipment are scarce at that time, Lyu wants to find some organizations to solve student’s concerns completely and help them make contributions. Thus, Lyu and CSSA invited WeStar which is a non-profit organization in Boston. They want to help China by accepting donations and buy medical equipment to China and they do well so far.

Her parent also cheer her up and ask her don’t be worried about the situation of their home country. They also feel glad that their daughter can organize the activity and make it influential.

“When my parents know what I am doing, they asked me never worried about them and they are glad that I care about my country.” She smiled, “That’s what I need to do at this time. I want them to know, no matter where I am, I always care about them, care about my country.”
